Cancer is the leading cause of deaths within the fire services. Firefighters, whether career or volunteer, have a 73% greater chance of being diagnosed with cancer than the general public. Since March of 2014, The Believe 271 Foundation, Inc., has assisted volunteers within Oneida and Herkimer Counties with this daunting diagnosis. Believe 271 / Gregory J. Wilsey Scholarship Winners The Believe 271 Foundation Inc. is pleased to announce the recipients of their Believe 271 / Gregory J. Wilsey Scholarships. This year the Foundation received forty applications from graduating high school seniors. The donation for the scholarships in the name of Gregory J. Wilsey was made to the foundation by Matthew and Lisa Wilsey in honor of Mr. Gregory J. Wilsey who was an advocate for the youth of the area. The winners of the four $500.00 scholarships this year are as follows: Derek Rieben – Oriskany Central School – son of Becky and Paul Rieben. Tonight I had the honor to present a check from the Believe 271 foundation to Joe Baker of the Lee Center Fire Department to help him with his illness. We are thinking of you Joe and get well. No one fights alone. Also the Lee Center Fire Department held a fundraiser for us and also presented us a check for $1500.00.  Thank you Lee Center Fire Department.
